I camped at LSU and it was great," Rontavious Wooten said. "I like the fans there and the coaches are great. They are like second fathers. They love to teach you and give you advice. I'm being recruited by (defensive line) coach Earl Lane and he said that I would be able to play right away there and that they would definitely get the ball in my hands." Wooten said he now slightly favors LSU.

Rontavious Wooten, the 5-foot-10, 162-pound wide receiver from Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, Fla., finished his junior season with 700 yards receiving and 700 yards rushing for 14 total touchdowns, helping lead his team to an 11-2 record.
"I have good quickness and speed," Wooten said. "I move good and can make people miss. I'm a playmaker, but I want to improve my routes and get into position better."

He benches 215-pounds, has a 35-inch vertical jump and runs the a 4.5 forty.

Wooten said he now favors LSU slightly over Miami, West Virginia, Michigan and Georgia. He's claiming all have offered as well as Auburn, Tennessee, UCF, South Florida and Rutgers, among others.

"I camped at LSU and it was great," Wooten said. "I like the fans there and the coaches are great. They are like second fathers. They love to teach you and give you advice. I'm being recruited by (defensive line) coach Earl Lane and he said that I would be able to play right away there and that they would definitely get the ball in my hands."

The only other school that Wooten has already visited is Miami. "It's only like one and half hours away," he said. "But it won't have an effect on me.

"I went to their spring game and it looked pretty good," he said. "They have some good players there, but they don't have anybody like me there. They have a lot of big wide receivers, but nobody small and fast like me.

"I think coach Randy Shannon is doing a good job," he said. "I really think they'll be a top team again."

Wooten says he won't narrow down his list until later this summer. "I think I'll have my top five by August," he said. "I probably won't make a decision until after my season.

"I'm still open though," Wooten said. "I like LSU because I've been to their camp and talked to their coaches the most and I don't really know much else about the other schools yet."

One school he hopes to learn more about is Michigan. "I love their tradition," he said. "I'm excited to see what kind of offense coach Rich Rodriguez runs next year, but I think it'll take some time to get the players he needs and get everything going there.

"But once that happens I think Michigan will be a top program for sure," he said.

Wooten also likes coach Rodriguez' former school, West Virginia. "I loved how they played the last few years under coach Rod," he admitted. "But I think they'll be able to continue. I just love their offense and how they use their receivers. They run a great offense and it would be the perfect fit for me. I'm planning on going to visit them next weekend."

Wooten also hopes to visit Georgia. "They have some of the best coaches in the country," he said. "I like how they are a top team in the SEC every year. They play well and I like how they are all about the team."

Wooten reports a 2.7 core GPA and took the ACT on June 7.

probably has not been evaluated yet

and look at who's offered him. you don't get offers like that unless you're a baller.

Are we supposed to be impressed with a 2.7 GPA?

to a lot of coaches, anything that gets a kid qualified is impressive.

Honestly, and you can hate on me all you want, my kid wouldn't play ball with that kind of GPA.

i wouldn't let my kid get away with that GPA either. but if he's going to college to free for football, it makes it more acceptable. what was Noel's GPA, what's TK's and finaus. i'm just saying most schools don't care as long as they qualify.

What if your 2.75 GPA kid has a career ending injury his first year at college and he can't play football anymore? A 2.75 GPA doesn't leave him prepared at all to succeed at the college level. Then he has to transfer to Marshall and then his life and your life are ruined.

...you have to undestand that no matter how hard people try sometimes, that the best grade they can get might not be that great

maybe he does try hard, he just isnt that really naturally smart. you never know.

i agree with you WVUgirl, but nnot everyone is going to have a good GPA. are you saying if you're kid had the opportunuties to go to school on scholarship for football you wouldn't let him play if his grades were bad.

I'm still disheveled as to why we recruit a 4 to 5 star and they drop to a 3 or 4. LSU recruits a 1 star and they become a 5...I have gotten to where a star means nothing unless it's prior to anyone offering, which seems to be impossible!

I forgot to mention my GPA was low entering college, but my other scores where high. It's not so much the GPA, bc anyone can screw up, it's the potential. Not to compare myself to a potential baller:)

I just don't think a 2.7 is that bad... It's not great, but the bottom line is some people are more intelligent than others and not everyone is capable of a 4.0.

Could it be a matter of work ethic? Sure. But it could also be a matter of his god given intelligence level.

maybe he didn't do well early in high school, and that is bringing down his GPA. that happens to a lot of kids.
