This may sound a little crazy but I think Nova will be number 1 mainly because they have a Naty a couple years ago and I actually don't have a real problem with it, at least in Basketball. If this were football I would be pissed because ranking matter.

1957-58 was the last time we were ranked #1!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1957%E2% ... s_men%27s_basketball_team

We have been dodged long enough. Time to get a break and show Bob his respect his team deserves.

The 1958–59 West Virginia Mountaineers men's basketball team represented West Virginia University in NCAA competition in the 1958–59 season. Coached by Fred Schaus and led by Hall of Fame guard Jerry West, the Mountaineers, then a member of the Southern Conference, lost in the final of that year's NCAA tournament to California 71-70.

We have been very successful over the past few years in basketball. 44 weeks (2016-2018) in the AP polls! Our team is genuine and not some timid supporter who is limited to understanding win ways. You must imagine it first before you can make it happen.

Bob Huggins needs to get his just due and tomorrow's rankings will go a long way in recruiting the best players that fit his system. We have 6-8 forwards this year that are playing like seniors and with the experienced players we have the leadership to bring the crown home in the polls at least for a few weeks this season.

Yes, Nova plays Xavier on the 10th but we have a tougher schedule and will return with continued winning.

We can break the old streak of 56 with Huggins. I am sure he is fully aware of this accomplishment.

This board is not familiar with winning ways but that will change as Bob brings fame and glory to his alma mater.

Texas Tech (14-1) may jump into the elite status in this week's rankings. Big 12 is getting a lot of recognition for its teams. We are the best conference in basketball this season.

You do realize that Huggins has been at WVU for 11 years now? I think the board is very familiar with winning ways. You, I am not so sure about.

Fans should start making signs for being #1 at Tuesday's game.

If we can win against Baylor and Texas Tech (top ten or five ranking pending) then surely #1 will be bestowed #1 upon Bob's team.

Esa Ahmad will be back for our away game against Texas Tech!

I think we will achieve #1 status shortly if not this week. We deserve the #1 spot this week but nothing is certain except that both rankings should show Nova and WVU at #1 and #2 and maybe split as they consider the actual upper tier play.

All this January #1 rankings nervousness is why I posted the comment. Did not see your post supporting but I do see the naysaying. Why is it that to belittle a fellow fan is so easy but doing some actual research and rallying the fans is not so easy? Please if you can not say something nice then do not speak.

Texas Tech will play on the road against Oklahoma before we play them at their house so we will know more about them in preparation for our game. Good to have Esa eligible for this game. Hold on to your seats cause this will be a roller coaster season to new highs we have not seen in our lifetime! Great to see collegiate sporting success come to our state, wish we could find success against obesity and diabetes, as we are ranking #1 in many fields of these diseases.

CAN you find the obvious bias error in this story by ESPN writer?

Jeff Borzello
ESPN Staff Writer

If everyone loses, does anyone move down?

While the task at hand isn't that deep, a wild first full week of conference play has brought the most changes to Power Rankings since the beginning of the season.

Teams ranked No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, No. 6, No. 7, No. 9 and No. 10 all lost at least once in the past week, including North Carolina (7) and Texas A&M (10) falling twice. Villanova and Purdue were the only top-10 teams not to lose this week. Six other top-25 teams also lost at least once.

Even with the shuffling around in November and December, we've generally had the same teams near the top of the rankings. Michigan State, Villanova and Duke have been near there pretty much all season, while Arizona State moved up after beating Kansas on Dec. 10.

But first, who's the new No. 1?

Well, Villanova is the only team in last week's top-7 that didn't actually lose -- so the Wildcats get the nod. Their resume isn't that much better than the rest of the field, but they've been the most consistent since the start of the season. They have neutral-site wins over Gonzaga and Tennessee, which have held up pretty well. The loss at Butler isn't bad at all. Moreover, Jay Wright's team has played 10 of its 15 games away from home -- and won nine of them. They move up top this week.

None of the top-5 teams that lost drop out of the top 10, which seems strange -- but again, that's what happens when everyone else loses too.

We did need several replacements, though.

West Virginia might be the hottest team in college basketball. The Mountaineers haven't lost since the season opener to Texas A&M, with 14 straight wins -- capped by Saturday's victory over Oklahoma. West Virginia now has high-level wins over Virginia and Oklahoma, as well as victories over Kansas State, Missouri and Oklahoma State away from home.

Purdue is one of just three teams nationally with four "RPI Group 1" wins, which includes home wins over teams ranked 1-30, neutral-site wins over teams ranked 1-50 and road wins over teams ranked 1-75. West Virginia and Kansas are the only other teams with four. The Boilermakers don't really have a headlining win, but they have beaten Arizona, Maryland, Butler and Marquette away from home, and also took care of Louisville in West Lafayette.

Virginia and Texas Tech are the two other teams rising rapidly, after each team's biggest win of the season: Virginia beating North Carolina at home, and Texas Tech going into Lawrence to hand Kansas a 12-point home loss. Neither team has a slew of great wins, but they all have only one loss also, with Virginia's coming at West Virginia and Texas Tech's coming against Seton Hall in New York.

The craziest part of the latest rankings: Only one of the four teams we just discussed was even in the top 10 last week. And now they're all ranked in the top six.

That's the 2017-18 college basketball season in a nutshell.

Yes, #7 WVU won against #8 but this control corporate zombie spews the lies to defend the money interest of ESPN. Time to get your congressman involved as the obvious fix is in against our team. Call the Gov and get an investigation started. Such clear dumping on our program is not going to happen without a clamor from the Mountaineers!

Actually, VA has a legit case to be #1 as their only loss is to us and it was an away game for them with a slim single-digit loss.

Zombie ESPN is correct as THEIR power poll was totally disrespectful of WVU in the past and sorry he is correct as they ranked us outside the top ten last week in the corporate trash rankings. Time to wake up and smell the coffee ESPN and realize false news will be called out!

False. No. 6 did not lose. Villanova and Purdue were not the only top 10 teams not to lose. Forgot about WVU!

I won't be calling my congressman, but the oversight pretty much sucks.

The Spartans' loss to Ohio State on Sunday opened the door for Nova to climb back to No. 1
Gary Parrish
Michigan State moved to the top of the CBS Sports Top 25 (and one) Sunday morning thanks to a combination of a 14-game winning streak and Duke's loss at NC State on Saturday. But then the Spartans spent Sunday afternoon getting blown out in an 80-64 loss at Ohio State. So now Villanova is No. 1 again.

To be clear, I'd be willing to listen to an argument for West Virginia, and I have no problem with anybody voting the Mountaineers No. 1 right now. But I went with Villanova over West Virginia because the Wildcats' neutral-court wins over Gonzaga and Tennessee register similarly to West Virginia's home wins over Virginia and Oklahoma, and because Villanova's lone loss (101-93 at Butler) is better than West Virginia's lone loss (88-65 on a neutral court to Texas A&M.

Either way, look at this top five.

Villanova
West Virginia
Virginia
Texas Tech
Oklahoma

Three of those schools weren't ranked at all in the preseason AP poll. Neither was No. 8 Arizona State. Or No. 12 TCU. Or No. 15 Florida State. So when you hear people say this season has produced unexpected storylines, it's true. Which should make for a fun rest of January, February and March.

BIGGEST MOVERS
1 VILLANOVA 6 MICHIGAN STATE
RK
TEAMS

CHG
RCRD
1Villanova The Wildcats' only loss is a single-digit loss at Butler. Their resume features wins over Gonzaga and Tennessee. 1 14-1

2 West Virginia The Mountaineers will take a 14-game winning streak into Tuesday's game with Baylor. Their resume features wins over Virginia and Oklahoma. 1 14-1

3 Virginia The Cavaliers' only loss is a single-digit loss at West Virginia. They'll take a six-game winning streak into Tuesday's game against Syracuse. 1 14-1

4 Texas Tech The Red Raiders are 3-0 in the Big 12 for the first time since 2004. Their resume features wins over Kansas, Baylor, Nevada and Kansas State. 1 14-1

5 Oklahoma The Sooners' 10-game winning streak was snapped Saturday at West Virginia. Their resume features wins at Wichita State and TCU.

Gary is unable to speak as if he supports WVU he may lose his funding source. The writers are nothing but timid zombies unable to think for themselves as the obvious #1 is denied the glory due to $$$$$$ corruption in collegiate sports. We know this is the case as the veil has been lifted too many times to expose the ugly truth.
