I really wish we could have had our usual tune up game before this one.
These big opening day match ups are nice, but I am not sure that our program is ready to do them. I just think we need the sacrificial lamb team on opening day to get our team gelling and figure out where the weaknesses are.
But then again, maybe I am completely wrong because just look at what Bobby Bowden did with his "we will play anyone, anywhere, anytime" philosophy.

We had 221 yards rushing and averaged 6.3 yards per carry. I don't consider that being "snuffed out".

If anything, I wonder if we shouldn't have run the ball more, controlled the clock, and let the defense rest.

YES!

Coach H is hell-bent on the uptempo offense. Sometimes, you have to run clock and give your D a chance to catch a breath. For all his faults, Dick-Rod knew when to go uptempo vs slowing things down. Our D was out of gas in the 4th quarter

Can someone find out if Jennings has be told to fair catch everything so as not to get hurt for the passing game. He literally had his hand up just after the ball was kicked and twice could have had an easy 10 yards before he was touched.

I called Dana on his office line to find out, but his secretary said he was unavailable. I'll let you know if he calls me back. #justmessin!

"Another punter?" I didn't know we had one to begin with.

Perhaps we could scour the cheerleading squad. Surely we can find someone there who can kick a ball farther than the punter we have now.

I bet if we get up a couple scores on ECU we will see Tevin Bush back on some punts. I think Jennings is there to not drop it.

Why not recruit the soccer team for someone to kick? Hell seems to me there are probably a lot of high school and Div III kickers that could do better than what we saw.

On another note, I wanted to hate Josh Jackson based on his name like the thug from Kansas but in his interview the kid seems like a solid kid with a good future at QB. I hate it when I find a reason not to hate. The kid beat us as much as we beat ourselves.

I was thinking that also. A little bit more about his coaching career would have been nice.

There are things I want rant about. But first, our guys played their ASSES off. Effort was at least 120%. That alone makes me optimistic. Grier and the offense will be great. The defense will be fine.

The defens needs to learn that EVERY SINGLE play MATTERS! You can NOT lose focus ... EVER!

But Special Teams??? Jesus &@$@& Christ Almighty. We don't have a second punter and we can't kick the kickoff through the end zone ... AGAIN!!!!!!!!

I think we have a second punter we just did not have him on the 80man travel squad.

Okay, with this much discussion about what happened in the game, I thought I would take another look with my coaching hat on and without my “fan” hat (plus no moonshine). Here’s what I saw:
Settle (4) and Wallace(8) were DOMININANT on the defensive line – they disrupted everything for the first 10 minutes of the game…we went away from our running game and began working quick type passes. Their defensive ends were capitalizing on what Settle and Wallace were causing and were crashing hard to destroy everything between the tackles. We got smart and had Grier keep it a few times on the option gives. Still, their ends kept crashing. Towards the end of the first quarter, they got tired and became human again and our running game picked up. We even hit Crawford’s big run right in between them while they were exhausted. They were tired in the second half.

Grier missed Jennings open deep but White and Jennings both missed catchable balls for big gains. Grier forced A LOT of throws into coverage trying to make things happen. Hell, his TD pass to Jennings never should’ve been thrown.

Defensively, Adam Schuler was horrible. 5 pancakes and 2 roller skates in the first 9 plays and they pulled him out of the game. Enter Jon Lewis. Schuler eventually came back in the 2nd quarter but the damage was already done. He was slow off the ball and didn’t appear to want any part of their tackles any more. Pegues had a rough first series as well but fought back. Lamont McDougal, all 5’ 9” of him, did pretty dang well subbing in. Schuler had a bad, bad game. We need help there. Jon Lewis never returned in the 2nd half. Wonder if he’s hurting?

Hakeem Bailey got burnt horribly on the post route due to very poor technique. They decided to back him off but they decided to disguise it by having him on the line and then sprinting back 10 yards pre-snap. VT caught this and burnt him again with a Dig Route for 15 yards. He was gone for the rest of the first half. Enter Mike Daniels.

Tony Gibson got caught with tendencies a couple times. He loves to loop from the wide side. VT ran under the loop a couple times for good (10 and 12 yd) runs.

Our swing passes to our backs look horrible. We ran one in the first half bad and again in the second half that was almost a disastrous lateral. We need to work on that. Grier is dumping it too quickly and it doesn’t have time to set up. Cajuste can’t get out there anyway. Cajuste didn’t play well.

Battle lost track of the TE for a big gain. Mike Daniels giving a huge cushion gets burnt for 14. McClease looked like a million dollar back because…we were too tired to tackle him. 2 big runs for a score.

Our punter has cramps. Are you kidding me? All of our ST left us in a hole all night.

We really miss David Long. Dylan Tonkery is getting thrown around. Bad 2 series for him to begin second half. Ditto for Ferns…they’re not ready yet.

Al Rasheed Benton played his tail off. Preston was hit or miss but made several big plays and was on the field ALL game.

Thank God for missed FG.

Much of the 2nd half, our starters dominated their defensive #2s.

Dana really did lose his composure on the kickoff no matter how he spins it.

Bailey came back in at safety (nickel package?) for the Bubble Go, both “up men” bit and came up, Bailey never picked up the guy streaking deep. Too easy.

Bailey got burned again for 23 but it was the defense. They were zone and neither he nor Kyzir picked up the man in their zone.

Schuler got roller skated again, Preston, Henry, Ferns and others all chased the HB…Jenkins runs for 40 yards to the 1.

Option keeper again for 10.

Horrible penalty by Battle on 3rd and 10.

Our defense got burned by being over aggressive and following fakes all night. That was the worst of what we did…flying to the ball when it wasn’t really there.

Third and 1, Dana still going off, they flag Cajuste (crap call) for holding…then Dana (earned)…3rd and 26. Drive over.

“No fumble” call, not even upon review.

VT player (Evans)with hurt leg, us driving for the lead, kept him on the ground for 5 minutes to rest their defense. Evans did not return though.

Jennings turned the wrong way and ran out from under a deep ball. 4 more minutes for Jennings cramping. Rested defense now. End of drive.

THANK GOD FOR MISSED FG.

We took 4 PI penalties…and they were. Despite all of the double and triple coverage contact…they took …none.

On our last drive, where did all the time go?

We picked up 5 first downs to “freeze” the clock to move the chains. They paused the clock for 3 seconds, 2 seconds, 3 seconds and finally for 7 seconds and 8 seconds. On the first 2 chain movements, we lost 17 seconds of clock time getting the next play off.

They are good but beatable. We aren’t nearly as strong or conditioned as we thought. We’re good…but we’ve got work to do. For most, effort really was 100%

But boy do we have an O-Line. About midway 2nd quarter you could see them coming together. I think Jones was overwhelmed at times but for a first time starter he played his ass off. Very proud of those men Sunday.

I may be a bit biased here, but that TV-time devoted to Jackson's dad....well that is time that could have been spent on Will's wife.

Mother to his kid. She's sure to have had many trials and tribulations. Young parents. Father desperately trying to juggle academic and athletic life on a new campus.

They should have shown her a lot more, and if they would have won (damnit!) ... interviewed her after the game.

I would have liked to see us run the ball more. I understand that (almost) every play they had 7-8 guys loaded in the box bc they wanted to test a guy who hasn't played in almost 2 years, and throw against their VERY good secondary. Minus the awful interception he threw he did very well. But, going back to the beginning of this, I would have liked to see Crawford have something like 18-20 carries, McKoy with 12-15 carries, and Petteway with 7-8 carries. I thought Grier kept the ball way too much for my comfort on read options bc he's our only QB and his health is precious to our success.

Defense is the defense. I was pleased with their performance. A lot of new guys playing together, you'll give up some drives and big plays. Hopefully our CBs continue to get better and learn to turn their head to defend the ball. Hakeem Bailey can lay the wood, I think he'll be great.

Specials teams somehow got worse which I didn't know was possible. Gary Jennings seems reliable enough to field a punt but he cost us significantly in field position by choosing not to field a few punts. And our punter (Kinney I think his name), good lord...I hope this was just a bad game for him. I'm curious to see what VT avg starting field position was.

The scoring drive where we were pushed back 3&26 turned out to be huge in the outcome of that game. I wish we had some answers from the refs about that sequence.

Overall: VT is a good team. We had chances to tie and win the game, I think it just came down to execution, which VT did better at. We got ECU, Del St, and KU to learn and grow before the schedule starts to get a lot tougher.

100%!

If this was any other game to power 5 team, it wouldn't sting so much. We just don't play rivalry games anymore, so when it finally happened, the outcome is very hard to swallow for me...

Ditto. Losing is one thing....losing to VA Tech just made it a lot worse. I'd rather lose to Kansas again than lose to Tech.

I think we can win some games because the big 12 is so weak. The conference did NOT have a good week. Luckily we have ok state at home. Hey if Ohio state can make the college football playoff with one loss to unranked Virginia tech at home then we can make the playoff with one loss to a ranked Virginia tech team on a neutral site away game.

Well we would also need the Ohio State bias which I am not sure we can get.

And we would have to beat Oklahoma at Norman which is a tall order.
