In other related ESPN news, all employees named Charlotte or Virginia have been placed on indefinite leaves of absence by the network.

Meh. I don't have a problem with it considering a young woman was murdered during a terrorist attack by a protestor who was protesting the removal of Robert E. Lee's statue in that very same city. If nothing else it's respectful.

ESPN has been going downhill for at least 10 years now. Sportscenter use to be enjoyable. It's difficult to watch now. The straw that broke the camels back for me is how they spend so much time talking about the drama that surrounds sports instead of the actual games/athletes. This story is a perfect example of that.

Respectful? - I know this should be saved for the soap box but, for this reply you should be forced to eat a bag of d--ks.
This Asian had as much to do with this event as the man on the moon and now he is relegated to doing another none event football game in shittsburgh. What a joke. Oh, that's right poor Robert Lee and Espn made a mutual decision - yeah you go to shittsburgh or you are shitcanned.
I was never at the table but, I am sure this was the mutual decision.
How would you feel, because of your name, you would not attend a conference or something important at work. I'll bet you would be the first to scream - ooooo this is so discriminatory.

As opposed to a none event game at Virginia? It isn't like they pulled him from Michigan/Ohio State.

It was interesting reading the reasoning by ESPN. You can chose to not believe it or believe it if you want but they said that they came to him with no real high level of concern other than they were worried that someone would make memes of him and that it might be best for his career to switch assignments. He said he didn't care and that he would do the other game. I just don't really see any reason for outrage. If I was Lee I would rather do Pitt-Youngstown St than Virginia-William and Mary. He got a better gig out of it I think.

In the end the plan backfired because he had memes made of him anyway.....I guess ESPN just doesn't understand the meme economy.

I'm not buying it. If they were doing it out of respect for what happened, then why publicize it? Those are supposed to be the types of things you do quietly to not cause a commotion. ESPN did the exact opposite. They made the decision and then publicized it. Their intent was to make an issue out of it, and possibly pat themselves on the back in doing so.

I'm mean for real, how many people would have even noticed if Robert wasn't the person announcing on game day? It's not like the guy has a huge fan base. He is a parttime announcer for goodness sake. It's obvious that ESPN's whole intent was to make an issue of it.

Not that I really care. ESPN has been pushing a left wing agenda for a while now. I just ignore it and watch the game. They serve their purpose to me either way.

There are over 11,000 "Robert Lee's" in the United States. Many of them may be Disney/ABC/ESPN customer's.

Maybe they should be notified that their customer relationship is offensive? Hmm...

ESPN might want to do some research into just what a "Cavalier" is.

They might be surprised to find out.

I remember seeing a comment somewhere that asked "When did this movie stop being a satire and become a documentary?" Or something like that. It's as if Mike Judge had a glimpse into a crystal ball 11 years ago.

They have to say something. They already announced that he would be doing the game earlier. I remember when they announced the broadcast pairings for various games earlier in August. Now realize that I don't really care about that kind of news but if you publicize them then change them you probably have to make an announcement.

Had they just moved him someone would have noticed and made a big issue about it. This was a no-win thing from the start.

I do agree they insert themselves into the story by announcing in the beginning of August who will do games because none of us really cares who is jawing about the game. I can either stand them or I can't. If I can't stand them I turn the sound down and watch the game without sound.
