Was in Columbus the past few days. The Columbus Dispatch had several articles about Matta being fired. One article mentioned that WVU head coach Bob Huggins would be a great fit, it went one to say, one source said Huggins would be interested. Go online and check it out. It was in Monday 's paper

Also, candidly, who is going to hire a guy who (i) will turn 64 before the start of the next college basketball season and (ii) has a known history of heart issues? A school would have to take a bit of a flyer to hire Huggins, and Ohio State does not seem like the type of school that will take a flyer on a coach.

Besides, Huggins leaving WVU for another school would be even more heart-breaking than what happened in 2007 by that guy who now lives in the desert. I can't believe that he would leave a state where the people are 100% behind him for a place that simply will not appreciate him in the same way.

I hope this never happens but this is as late as today

A handful of names have started to emerge as candidates as Ohio State aims to finalize a replacement for men’s basketball coach Thad Matta by as soon as Friday.

With a source telling The Dispatch that athletic director Gene Smith has told two players that they will have a new coach before the weekend, multiple sources have mentioned three names as candidates for the Buckeyes: Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams, Providence coach Ed Cooley and West Virginia coach Bob Huggins. Current assistant coach Chris Jent had an interview set with Smith for today to discuss the position as well.

Creighton coach Greg McDermott offered OSU job.. No word yet on whether he has accepted the offer. That being said, I was a bit disturbed by the following quote from the article:

Quote:
Sources close to Huggins indicated that he let Ohio State know that he was interested in the position with an eye on closing the borders, keeping top in-state talent at Ohio State and chasing a national championship within the next few years before retiring and handing the reins to an up-and-coming coach.

Huggins, an Ohio State assistant from 1978 to ’80 and Cincinnati’s coach from 1989 to 2005, has coached the Mountaineers since 2007 and passed 800 career wins last season.

I love Huggs. But part of me can kind of buy that quote to a degree. I fully believe he would have never come to WVU if he hadn't been fired be Cincinnati. He still loves his time there and Ohio in general. Look at how many top guys from Ohio he has brought to WVU: Macon, Ahmad, Staten, Culver this season. It would be so easy for him in Columbus.

I don't know if he would actually leave. But if these statements ever got proven to be true, my opinion on Huggs would change some.

Sounds like OSU made an offer to Greg McDermott. Take a sigh of relief.

Looks like McDermott is staying at Creighton.

In other news, a whole bunch of people in West Virginia are now holding their collectives breaths.

I have a hard time believing Huggs would leave. As much as he loves the state and WVU, he knows what it would do to the people. In my opinion it would be much worse than old Dickrod leaving.

I can't see him having that much better of a chance to win the national championship. He has a system in place here with recruits that know what he wants. He would have to start over at OSU. Ya he'll probably be able to get better talent but I can't imagine one and done guys buying into his system especially for just one year. Those guys don't want to have to play defense or split time.

Probably just trying to get a higher bonus for beating Kentucky next year so he can donate it to his charity.

If he can get one and dones, he won't need to use the press like he does here. The style of play would be much different.

Also, if this is a contract move, it rubs me the wrong way. Huggs could get almost anything he wants at WVU if he asks.

Relax people.

Even if Huggy leaves, there are quality young coaches waiting in the wings.

Though I'm certain you're joking, replacing a coach in June would be absolutely miserable, though the Butler board is full panic mode because OSU re-offered Holtmann with a BIG SUM of money and he's seriously considering it, he might be PAID soon.

Holtmann to be announced today.

In other news, a bunch of WVU fans suddenly have that unsettling feeling like they found out that their main squeeze was flirting with another girl (or guy, depending on your preferences).

Guess that rumor was true, for the mess Ohio State made in the process of the hiring, they came away with a decent hire, wonder who goes to Butler now, a top 25 program, a couple national championship appearances, could be interesting.

Just gotta keep him separated from the PNC Park beer vendors and Pittsburgh police.

On a more serious note. This is a great chance for him. He has been set up pretty good coming off a championship game team. If he wants the job in the future it needs to start with success at Fairmont State. FSU has been my second favorite college basketball team for a long time. I hope he is successful.

At the same time if it comes down to a quick exit for Huggins, I think the next WVU coach is already on the bench in Everhart. That is just my opinion.

There was a good article about how Duquesne messed up by letting him go and how he benefitted from it.

Here is the article I read.

Yeah, the guy down at the gas station said, Bob Huggins is on the short list.
