MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 12, 2017) – West Virginia University fans are invited to attend a celebration for the 2017 national-champion rifle team on Monday, March 13, from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m., inside the WVU Coliseum Gold Gate Entrance.

The Mountaineers (12-0, 8-0 GARC) and coach Jon Hammond will be available to greet fans and take pictures. Fans also will have the opportunity to take pictures with the team’s nation-best 19th NCAA Championships trophy.

WVU shot a championship-record 4723 score and won its fifth straight NCAA title on Saturday at The Ohio State University’s French Field House in Columbus, Ohio. The win is the team’s sixth in 11 years under coach Hammond. Freshman Morgan Phillips won the individual smallbore title on March 10, and classmate Milica Babic won the air rifle title on March 11.

The rifle team makes heavy use of a sports psychologist. Couldn't hurt the basketball team -- missing 6 straight free throws. A 70% shooter has roughly 1 chance in a 1000 of missing 6 straight.

WVU shot 2390 air rifle in a match against # 8 OHio State today, breaking its old record (and the national record) of 2388. The four scorers averaged 597.5 out of 600. They also had a good smallbore score of 2341, for a total of 4731. This is the 2nd best regular season score ever, just surpassed by WVU's 4740 a couple of seasons ago.

Ohio State shot 2354 air rifle and 2333 smallbore, for a total of 4676.

WVU's 4740 was the rifle equivalent of Bob Beamon's long jump that broke the old record by perhaps 2 feet and wasn't broken for decades. It broke the old record (just set a week previously) by 16 points, and the record before that by 20. It also set new national records in both small bore and air rifle. In particular, the small bore score was much higher than the previous record. WVU's score today was the first time a team has scored in the 4730s.
