Time for another stroll down memory lane. Some of you may remember this little nugget of WVU history. ..I've personally tried to forget it. This was one of those moments that raised the question, Do these Virginia colleges have some sort of a mental problem or is it just us?

It was the Continental Tire Bowl circa 2003 (if I'm wrong about the year, someone let me know. I try to forget this game). After an embarassing first half, the WVU faithful was already angry enough. The question was, could this get any worse?

Enter the University of Virginia Pep Band. This pack of the biggest bunch of jackasses ever assembled took the field. It started out innocent enough..just a crappy looking band trying to play forgettable songs...that's when they had some kind of bachelor ripoff. There was this nicely dressed girl that was supposed to represent UVA on one side, and this girl dressed like a hillbilly on the other dressed to represent...you guessed it....and so did the rest of the crowd as well.

As UVA's pep band started to make fun of the entire State of WV...I though I was going to see a group beating. I've never seen that many folk flip anybody the bird in all my life. We were just seconds away from a large scale arse whipping.....

That's when the real band, the Pride of West Virginia, took the field. They didn't even let these losers have a chance to get off the field before they started marching on. The WVU band pretty much forced them off the field. Later on, both this group of jackasses and the WVU band were outside. Many people were yelling at the Pep Band "Take a look at a real band (insert explicitive here)"

Immediately the bowl officials were saying "Oh we didn't know they were going to do that."..they sure didn't do anything to stop it. Then Former Gov. Bob Wise started calling for heads and demanding an apology. I don't recall if one ever came or not but I do remember UVA claiming they has disbanded the Jackass club. I never recall before this, or after this, a college being asked to apologize to a whole State.

To me though, this little incident showed me that no one has any respect for WVU or for this state for that matter. Anybody who would let an entire State of people be belittled for doing nothing more than showing up at a football game doesn't need to be organizing a little league football game, much less a college bowl game.

This also showed us just home much these Virginia teams respect us. UVA can say what they want to, they knew this was coming. This same behavior could have been expected out of Virginia Tech. I've always hoped we'd play these jackasses again and show no mercy. We'd see who would be laughing now.

They can't handle the fact that the better class of people broke away in the 1800s. And they are still pissed off that they sided with the losers back then, too. WV beat their asses back then and would probably still be doing so today.

Nothing worse than someone who looks down on the trailer park because they got a doublewide....that is Virginia and its attitude about most of the states around it.

something simliar to that happened around here sadly enough. Bridgeport...one of my schools rivals should feel good about themselves for me standing up for them. The home band always lets the visiting band go first. Rather than being the good guy and letting the home band have all of halftime they decided to still do their show. Well, it was Halloween and their senior night so they had the whole thing planned out on the field. The other band goes out on the field...the drum majors signals to start the show and the band lays down on the field. Rather than taking their 7 minutes and getting off the field they laid there almost the entire length of halftime...and if I'm not mistaken they were dressed in costumes. So not only did they try to make a fool of the other band...they completely took away their senior night. I wonder whre they got such a dirty idea...

Yea, I was there for that specatcle. I was also drunk. Very drunk.

And you know what? I didn't even get pissed off. It was quite amusing watching their arts program take a dump all over itself. I was in band for four years at East Fairmont High School, and learned a lot of lessons about class, professionalism, and talent... something they showed none of that afternoon. It was actually quite sad that they sucked so terribly that they had to trade musical talent for a cheap f*ck.

The next time you drive past the Morgantown building that looks like a toilet and sounds like a part of the male anatomy, thank your lucky stars that we have a group with a deep, damn-proud history that puts on a class-act performance... no matter what the scoreboard reads.

Cheers.

It's not often that I hear people praising The Pride off-campus. It sounds damn good.

In case anyone cares, The Pride's halftime show at the MOO game is a movie music show. It features Superman, 007, Mission: Impossible, and Pirates of the Caribbean 2. MOO's "band," if one could consider it a band, is doing an Earth, Wind and Fire show. We'll blow 'em out of the water, if the crowd doesn't boo them out of the stadium first.

I wish I could be there to hear. As it is I figure I'll be lucky to get tickets to any game, much less the "Massacre in the Mountains"

The WVU Band is something everybody in the state can be proud of.
I've always thought they've done a great job.

Massacre in the Mountains, huh? That's a pretty kickass name; beats the hell out of "The Friends of Coal Bowl."

I should probably make another thread for this, but does anyone know where I can view/download videos of Mountaineer Football? I know www.youtube.com has a few, including the total annihilation of Penn State in '88. I think I might go insane waiting for the season to start again.

It's a lot of fun. The directors are awesome, and the band is filled with tradition. We always sing the Alma Mater before a full-band meal, and we ate with the UGA band before the Sugar Bowl.

What do you play, Mountaineer0711?

ha that's entirely possible. are you talking about the Morgantown band spectacular? I'll more than likely be at that but our band are losers and we will not be attending. There are only like three people from my school are actually in the Pride...cool kids though. how many years do you have left up there?

Yeah, the Mo'town Spectacular. That sucks about your band not being there; at least you're going anyways. The people at band festivals cheer harder for us than the fans do during pregame.

The upcoming year is my second, but knowing me I'll try to stay in band for 25 years.

I know what you mean about trying to stay in for as long as physically possible...I migh actually try to march DCI before I age out or suck it up. People actually sit and watch the band at spectaculars so it's surprisingly cool

Marching DCI would be a lot of fun. A good friend of mine made Carolina Crown on trumpet a year or two ago, but he decided not to march in it because it was cutting into the high school marching season.

I saw a DCI show during the summer, but there was a mjor downside: it was in Huntington. The aforementioned friend was the one driving, and he put in the Mountaineer Marching Band 2004 Highlights CD and blared it with the windows down when we got into Huntington.

Yeah, The Pride is awesome. I remember when I saw them in person for the first time. It was insane.

I wish they'd hurry up with the 2005 Highlights CD. They were supposed to ship in March.
