57 days kids. Zac Cooper was one bad ass undersized D-End. He was a good 3rd down rush end in 07 then they tried him at outside linebacker in 08 and it appeared that he got lost in the shuffle. either way I was a big fan of the guy.

Yesterday we talked about Chuck Howley and that 57 team. Found this nice little article about Howley from a few days ago. http://www.msnsportsnet.com/page.cfm?story=18808&cat=exclusives

ESPN Blue Ribbon Preview Cont.

NEWCOMERS

Expect to see a lot of new faces sprinkled throughout the lineup this season, while others must wait their turn but are promising.

Roberts made a big impression at running back during the spring and should get a chance early to solidify a job. Buie will get a look, as will Dustin Garrison (5-8, 165), who rushed for 2,842 yards and 46 TDs last year.

Don't expect to see much of quarterbacks Millard or Athey under center, although each will get a crack at some mop-up work and had better be ready, in case anything happens to Smith.

The Mountaineer receiving corps has some good depth this year, so it might be tough for KJ Myers (6-2, 185) or Dante Campbell (6-5, 205) to get on the field this year, but each has promise. The same goes for guard Justin Johnson (6-4, 288).

Francis made an immediate impact during the spring and has the talent to be extremely productive this year, although he may be a specialist to begin the season.

End Kyle Rose (6-4, 240) can get into enemy backfields, while D-backs Terrell Chestnut (6-0, 177) and Vance Roberts (5-10, 170) have plenty of speed and promise.

56 day till the mother of all beat downs. Andy Emery is our poster child today, he was a long time special teamer, but none the less he was a Mountaineer. In the spring of 07 he won the Tommy Nickolich Award, what ever that is. Here's to you Andy Emery where ever you may be.

Now some links that have nothing to do with the probation:

Holgorsen names recruiting coordinator.

WVU line puts troubles in past

and the final portion of the blue ribbon preview:

BLUE RIBBON ANALYSIS

It's hard to tell what shape this Mountaineer season will take. Before Stewart's removal, there were questions about whether the team would adjust to the bi-lateral coaching hierarchy. Now, everybody is wondering about the psychological effects of Holgorsen's ascension.

WVU certainly has the talent to make a run at the title in the Big East. There is no big-time threat in the conference, so even though the Mountaineers have to worry about their defense and whether a carry-the-mail running back can emerge, they should be right there in late November/early December. Then again, it's possible a schism could develop between Stewart loyalists and the Holgorsen camp that might not be repaired until changes can be made in the off-season.

The offense should be in good shape, even if the running back job is performed by a committee. Smith is a good triggerman for the Holgorsen spread, and even though he isn't the most mobile guy around, Houston's Keenum isn't exactly Jesse Owens, and he put up monster numbers. There are plenty of targets available, and the line has promise, particularly if Spain lives up to his potential. If a couple of reliable backs can be found -- and the offense itself should help in that pursuit -- WVU could be the most potent attack in the league.

It may have to be, because the defense is light up front and has some depth concerns. It's one thing to rely on Casteel's magic and another to handle those tough situations when someone has to make a play. While Irvin, Francis and Tandy have big-time potential, they need people around them to handle some of the rough stuff.

If the Mountaineers can develop depth at the front end of the 3-3 Stack, they'll be in good shape. If not, get ready for a season of arena football. No matter what happens on the field, there will be plenty to watch and consider off it.

The Mountaineers hope the soap opera ended in June, but situations like this tend to have plenty of action in the sequels.

This man was a badass when The Bruce was still playing with power rangers? False, even though Gary Stills was bad ass while Bruce was a child, Bruce never played with power rangers, while a child Bruce was a Texas Ranger kicking peoples teeth out.

During that game vs VT in 97, The WVU Defense held the chokies to just under 200 yards total offense on the day. The 97 team will be remembered as one of Nehlen's classic chokes down the stretch. We saw this play out time and time again, high expectations developed in the first 3/4 of the season only to be crushed in November. The first I lived through was the 84 season, followed by 91, 96 and 97. Now you have to give Ryan Nehlen's Grandpaps some credit though, he did have a few late season pushes that resulted in us having some OK seasons. 85, 87, which was a freaking work of art, we where 4-4 with Virginia Tech, Rutgers, and Syracuse to go. We beat Virginia Tech, and Rutgers then what I consider the 3rd worst heart break during my Fandom (pitt 07, Miami 96, 'Cuse 87) The cuse were undefeated and we damn near spoiled it with a bunch of scrappy young kids. Dick MacPherson did have stones and he wanted and undefeated untied season. Luckily we repaid the favor in 88. Following the game we were given the invite to the Sun Bowl. I believe this was because OSU turned it down because of the firing of Earl Bruce. The end of the 94 season was also a gem, taking a 3-5 record and finishing 7-5 down the stretch with wins over BC and the Orange, which I was present for both. Enough history lets get to the links of the day:

Great Job Southie creating some excitement!!! Speaking of excitement, does anyone know when fall camp starts this year? Last year it was like August 8th, but that seems a little late if we are playing Sept 4th?

Thanks gaeer. Most credit goes to wvustats.com, google images, and wvupressbox.com. 54 Days to go, just think we have less time then what it takes to play the NBA Playoffs till we get to see the Mountaineers "kick hell out of Marshall" (bonus what movie, the original line I believe was "...see my favorite team kick hell out of Tampa Bay".)

Anyway today's poster child is Hunter Bittner, a reserve linebacker from Irwin, Pa. God Bless you wvustats.com and facebook because we we're SOL on this one. I was going to tell you guys about Gregory Dragovich. Dragovich was a o-lineman back in the 60's from Keystone, a true southwvboy and was the 1966 most improved lineman of the year. But I couldn't find any pics of the guy. Only this pdf file of a sports page that tells about his award. http://www.eurobasket.com/Israel/photos/CohenMintz.pdf (bottom middle under headline "Gillespie Named As High School
Player Of Year). Little back story on the 66 team, not a good year, we went 3-5-2 with all wins coming against sisters of the poor Southern Conference opponents. This was Jim Carlen first year at the reins and my understanding is that the 66 team provided the building blocks of the 69 team which until 88 was considered as the best team in school history. Though I would consider the 54 team a step above the 69 team as it went 8-1 only giving up double digits 4 times and at no time did it give up more then 14 points. But neither the 54 team or the 69 team beat sPitt and State Penn in the same year. Enough of the history lesson lets get to the links of the day:

When we get to Steve Slaton then later Pat White..we definitely have a lot to be excited about.

Even more so when we're out of players.

Hell Yeah, This is what a Mountaineer Linebacker looks like, and this was how a Mountaineer Linebacker conducts himself. Bronco Maybe you can remember that when you get out and start your career over at Glenville or Concord.

And he came in 5th as a senior in the shot putt while at Cleveland Benedictine.

Magro and Goode are what you want to see in a linebacker. Just hope that Goode is able to put it all together this year. Should be a 1st or 2nd team all big east selection at seasons end. Links of the day: the nothing to do with lawyers guns or money edition:

I searched every corner of the interwebz for a tim brown pic. That was the person I wanted to use. Next year I'm starting with 100, Carl "Chuck" Kinder he was a kicker from St. Albans 63 to 66 and it appears he wore number 100. http://wvustats.com/football/player.php?team_id=308&person_id=728

more on Mr. or should I say Colonel Kinder:

Carl “Chuck” Kinder, Jr.
Chuck Kinder is an honorable recipient of the 2004 “Distinguished West Virginian Award” by Governor Bob Wise. He is a graduate of West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling. During college, Chuck was the kicker/punter for the West Virginia University Mountaineer Football team. He played in 31 games, scored more than 100 points in his career, and ranked among the top ten punters nationally. He is the only football player in NCAA history to wear the uniform number 100.
In January 1995, Chuck retired from a twenty-four year career in the United States Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During this period, he served as a personnel psychologist and more than a decade as a trainer for middle management Army officers. He graduated from the United States Army Command and General Staff College and served as instructor and adjunct faculty until his retirement. Chuck was the General Manager of the Charleston Civic Center and Auditorium for six years, where he managed a budget of $1,500,000 and a full-time staff of 17. In 2006, Chuck retired as the Director of Training for the West Virginia State Auditor’s Office.
